Dutch ChristianUnion wants TikTok ban

The Dutch political party ChristianUnion wants to ban TikTok, children's number one video app. TikTok comes from China, and there are concerns that users' data could end up in the hands of the Chinese government.

“Our job is to protect citizens. TikTok in this form should be taken off the market,” said ChristenUnie MP Don Ceder. Dutch media outlet RTL News reports.

“Our whole class is on TikTok,” says 11-year-old Mballu from The Hague's Zuidwalschool. The popular app has over 3.5 million users in our country and is the most popular among children. “Some spend up to three hours a day on it,” classmate Dominik knows. “We know there is criticism of the app and are also taught about it at school. For example, about protecting your privacy. But I'm not worried.”

The Christian Union sees it differently: the smallest governing party in this coalition has long had concerns, says MP Ceder. Because the way the company currently operates and handles user data is not acceptable, he believes. That is why the ChristenUnie wants a ban.
