Chairman of Danish Christian Democrats steps down after disappointing election results

The national chairman of the Christian Democrats, Marianne Karlsmose, resigned after her party did not make it into parliament in last week's general elections.

Karlsmose suggests that the party give up the dream of entering the Danish Parliament and focus on regional politics instead. This writes the Christian Danish daily Kristeligt Dagblad. The resignment of Karlsmose did not come as a surprise. “I have long been clear that this election was my last as a parliamentary candidate for KD at the national level and that I would step down as chairman after the election if we were not elected”, she said in a press release.

In last week's election, the party was eligible to stand and received 0.5 per cent of the vote. However, it was not enough to be elected into Parliament, as the barring limit is two per cent.

Karlsmose calls the latest election result “very disappointing”. “I do not doubt that KD has a justification in Danish politics. At the same time, I must also state that there are far too few Danes who agree with me. It is time for us in KD to face the realities”, says Karlsmose. She, therefore, suggests that the party only focuses on regional and municipal politics and contributes to the political debate as opinion makers. “It is painful but necessary because I can no longer see how our party will gain enough strength to get back into Parliament.”
